The Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant is Singapore’s fourth desalination plant and the first large-scale dual-mode desalination plant in the country, capable of treating seawater as well as freshwater from the Marina Reservoir, where rainwater is collected. When the water levels in the reservoir are low, seawater can be pumped into the plant to be desalinated. When the reservoir water levels are high, the plant can treat the water from the reservoir.

The innovative architectural design of the plant allows it to blend in with the surrounding environment. The water treatment equipment is located completely underground, and its roof features a 20,000 m² rooftop garden located at ground level, offering a green space for community recreation.

Elevate’s UltraPly TPO thermoplastic roofing membrane with a thickness of 1.5 mm was used to waterproof the roof of the desalination plant and provide a durable support for the roof garden, which features a variety of plants and even trees. Elevate Master Contractor Heng Boon Seng Construction carried out the installation of the roofing system in about 6 months.

The Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant, which started operations in June 2020 and was officially inaugurated on 4 February 2021, will be able to produce up to 137,000 m3 of fresh drinking water daily.
