Brand new daycare near Paris chooses RubberGard EPDM for its green roof

The new municipal daycare facility in Dammarie-lès-Lys, in the south-east of Paris, opened its doors in the summer of 2018. It is located in the city center, near a neighborhood of large housing estates under renovation and a listed abbey from the XIII century.

This heterogeneous environment led Altana Architectures to work around a simple and compact volume revealed by the aesthetics of its five facades. The envelope is dressed in zinc cladding in a mix of different colors and the roof is covered with a green roof system.

The green roof, alive with the seasons and with its own identity, offers a pleasant view from the neighboring towers and echoes the woodlands that surround the abbey. The square volume includes an inner courtyard, a protected cocoon dedicated to children. A zinc cornice highlights the building and red aluminum joinery contrasts with the gray shades of the envelope.

The wooden roof structure of the new daycare building was covered first with a vapor control membrane, followed by a layer of polystyrene insulation. About 900 m² of Elevate’s RubberGard EPDM roofing membrane with a thickness of 1.5 mm were then installed by Firestone Master Contractor Ecobat 77. The whole project was completed in less than four weeks by a crew of 3 roofers.

RubberGard EPDM offers real advantages for installation over wooden roof decks. Installed independently without the use of flame and glued with bonding adhesive only at the joints, it ensured optimum water and airtightness.

On the advice of the roofing contractor, the architect decided to also cover the parapets with RubberGard EPDM in order to achieve visual continuity on the roof.

Both Ecobat 77 and Altana Architectures highlighted the on-site support of Firestone, who provided technical assistance and regularly visited the site to answer specific questions.
