New national park in Singapore features water-cleaning ponds lined with PondGard EPDM

The 90-hectare Jurong Lake Gardens are Singapore’s newest national gardens, created for families and the community to come together. The park, designed by British award-winning landscape architecture practice Gustafson Porter + Bowman, has the concept of embracing change while preserving heritage as overarching design theme. It comprises the Lakeside Garden (which opened to the public in April 2019), the Chinese and Japanese Gardens and the Garden Promenade (which will open progressively from 2021 onwards).

Visitors can experience both the traditional landscapes in the heart of the islands and the most exciting and contemporary horticultural displays in the show gardens at the water’s edge. Native flora and fauna are protected and have been allowed to flourish, encouraging biodiversity.

Both EPDM and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liners were considered to waterproof the two inland ponds in the Lakeside Garden area. As the technical evaluation progressed, EPDM emerged as the best choice for a project of this complexity. The two ponds are interconnected, including swales and basins to bring about a natural water system. Besides their aesthetic function, the ponds act as bio-retention basins to clean rainwater in a natural way. Rainwater is collected and harvested to water the plants within the park. The water treatment takes place naturally by means of specific plants and microorganisms present in the pond filtration area. This helps maintain the water quality and prevent algal blooms over time.

In total, about 5,000 m² of Elevate’s PondGard EPDM membrane were used. Installation was carried out by long-term Elevate local partner Heng Boon Seng Construction, who has a proven track record of several pond projects successfully completed in the region, including the Legoland Park lagoons in Johor (Malaysia). Building on a strong partnership that spans over two and a half decades, Heng Boon Seng Construction and Elevate worked closely together to satisfy all the design requirements of this complex and intricate project.
